I love that my Dad reads my blog. He has even offered advice on occasion. I was particularly grateful for his advice on the “When is it OK to Quit” dilemma. Recently my Dad addressed my writing in an email:
I follow your bantering blonde blog religiously, even though my English seems almost Elizabethan in comparison. I guess I could get into joggy bloggy if I tried, but it offends the hundreds of thousands of $ investment in my own and my children’s education
Apparently, my blogging voice has caused a bit of anxiety for my poor Dad. I don’t blame him. I flinch a bit as well when I go back and read some of my writings. Many of you have experienced first hand, my annoying obsession with editing everything I read. You are likely amused by the fact that I often abandon grammatical rules and resort to made up words and jargon. While I know that his email was written in jest, I’m not sure my Dad is as amused…
Sometimes I love to write and sometimes it just sucks huge. I have to write an awful lot of copy for my clients. My communications are very proper and professional. My blog is my sloppy silly alter-ego. It supports my professional existence even if I do write in, to quote my Dad’s recently coined term, Bloghese. I like to have fun and when it is appropriate I let it all hang out.
“But it isn’t your voice” my Dad would say. I was raised to speak properly. I do speak properly. In fact, I speak very well in front of large groups and I’m available, so give me a ring! Is it my voice? I think that it is. I may not always speak that way but those who know me (including my Dad whom I have inherited my humor from) know that I like to inject a bit of my dorky silliness into conversation.
Is it appropriate? Here? YES! I think so. I love the banter! I love the dialogue. I have such an awesome active following. People ask me all the time how I get ya’ll to interact. I think it has a lot to do with the way I write and the dialogue that continues via email, twitter and comments.
What do you think? Will I regret my crazy writing someday? Will clients wonder who the heck they have working for them? Should my Dad be a guest blogger??? He’s funny, say yes!! Come on Dad – what do ya say?
